Re: SHOWCASE

Jeremy Hughes

Hi Ralph,

We don't (currently) have any plans to import Showcase galleries.

One limitation that Showcase shares with Freeway is that it is a 32-bit application, so it won't work on recent versions of macOS (post-Mojave).

I wonder if there is a way of converting Showcase galleries into Exhibeo galleries? It might be worth asking about this on Exhibeo-Talk.

SHOWCASE

When I was working in Freeway, I used Showcase instead of Exhibio to create image galleries because it had much greater control and precision. Are there any plans to allow exports from Showcase to Xway or does anyone know of any workarounds to use Showcase files in Xway? I’m hoping I don’t have to start all over.

Re: More on text handling

Hi Geoff,

This isn't something that Xway supports natively yet (we're planning to do that in future), but you can use CSS Flexbox (via Extended Properties in Xway) to arrange boxes side by side.

See this thread:

https://softpress.groups.io/g/xway-talk/topic/75298839

Floating text around images is also something that Xway doesn't support natively yet (it's on the to-do list), but once again you can use Extended Properties to do this - select the image and add a property called "float" with a value of "left" (or "right"), omitting the quotes.

More on text handling

Looking at the Softpress / Xway website, towards the bottom of the page there are two rows of icons as attached. These have text underneath and I see that the text blocks, while remaining independent of the other blocks, re-flow as the window is resized. Can this be done without the need for special coding? The closest I can get is to make the text part of the image, but of course it then scales along with the image.
Also, having scoured the user manual, I can't find any method of running text alongside an image without the second line dropping below the image, as its height seems to define the line-spacing. Will this ability be in a later version?
Thanks
Geoff

Thanks to Geoff for spotting this!

Re: Missing component

The missing images (Web view) problem happens when a page is in a subfolder.

We'll fix this in b4 (April/May probably).

Thanks I'll do that now, also a separate email detailing the process. I notice this time, quitting and reopening has no effect.

Sure.

Send me some steps that I can use to reproduce the problems. Something like:

1. Do this
2. Do that
3. >> This happens

Re: Missing component

Hi Jeremy. The same thing has happened again with several pages of Exhibeo galleries – images missing on web view, but visible in Preview. There are also issues duplicating pages then changing the page link. Change one, and they all change.
Can I send the files via WeTransfer?

Thanks
Geoff

Re: Missing component

Hi Geoff,

Revert To is a bit different from Time Machine. Time Machine restores a file, while Revert To reverts to a previous version of a document. It's a Mac function (rather than an Xway-specific function) and it works the same way in all modern (document-based) applications. The OS keeps a new version whenever you choose Save from the File menu. If you choose the "wrong" version in Revert To, you should be able to go back and choose a different version. If you Save before reverting, you should be able to choose the version you were using before you reverted. (It might be worth experimenting to confirm that this is what happens.)

Hi Jeremy.
Quitting and restarting Xway restored everything – very strange, just like my copy & paste problem (message 763) when a restart cleared that problem.
This has thrown up another question on reverting to earlier versions, which I did in the hope of resolving this issue. Revert To > Browse all Versions...  brings up a display similar to that of Time Machine. The latter, when restoring an earlier version gives the opportunity to replace the current version or to keep both, which is invaluable if you aren't sure the version you are restoring is the correct one. Xway doesn't appear to offer that, meaning that by choosing Restore you are burning your bridges, unless a copy is made first.
Thanks for your continuing help!
Geoff

Re: Missing component

Hi Geoff,

I haven't seen that happen. Can you send us the document to look at, maybe via Dropbox?

(support at softpress dot com)

It might also be worth quitting and restarting Xway, in case the Web view (or Apple's WebKit) has got confused somehow - if everything displays OK when you preview in a browser, this suggests the problem might be with the Web view / WebKit rather than the published output.

Missing component

Geoff Mullett

Having opened an xway document after several days of not working on it, all the Exhibeo components seem to be missing when I select Web View Preview. However, If I select File > Preview everything is in place. I've tried reconnecting/replacing the component, but it makes no difference.
Also, in Web View Preview, not only are the component images showing question/missing marks, the page shows elements from another page that doesn't exist on on this working page.
I created a new document and added the same components and they preview OK, so I've stopped work on my site for now – just in case!

Re: Import a Freeway web site into Xway

Jeremy Hughes

I've sometimes had problems copying from Freeway to Xway and other programs. I think this is because Freeway uses old (Carbon) pasteboard APIs.

An alternative approach is to preview from Freeway to a browser, and then copy from the browser to Xway.

Re: Import a Freeway web site into Xway

Geoff Mullett

The text I was importing was from an existing Freeway document, where one can see the very useful 'invisibles', so certainly a paragraph block.
However – a required switch-off of my computer meant I had to quit xway (something I hadn't done for at least 5 days). When I reopened the file, everything had gone back to normal. I've been working the site for a couple of days now without any reoccurrence of the formatting problem. Perhaps a gremlin somewhere.

Re: Opening an Xway file

Jeremy Hughes

Hi Alan,

The next version of Xway (b4) defaults to having items in the Site panel open in a closed state, except for the current page.

Remembering the actual state is something we may look at in future (we have it logged as an issue) but it's not straightforward: the state is different for each document, so it would probably need to be saved as part of the document. On the other hand, it's not an actual editing change, so we probably don't want to resave the document every time the Site panel changes.

You can use the following workaround when opening a document in b3:

1. Option-click on the Site folder (this will close everything)
2. Click on the Site folder (this will open the top level)
3. Option-click on the current page (this will reopen everything in the current page)

Opening an Xway file

Alan Coomber

Hi!
A minor annoyance!  When I open an Xway file all the folders in the site panel are fully expanded so my first job is to collapse most of them so that I can see where I need to be working.  Is it possible to have them appear as they were when the file was last saved and closed?
Many thanks
Alan

Re: Import a Freeway web site into Xway

Hi Geoff,

I wonder if the text you've pasted is actually divided into paragraphs.

If you click three times (to select a paragraph), does that match what you think is a paragraph?

Can you post a link to the site that you're copying from?

Jeremy
