Re: Overlapping of Items

Jeremy Hughes

There are two ways to control the front-to-back order of items (in Xway and HTML/CSS):

  1. Items that are earlier in the flow order are normally further back than items that are later in the flow order. If you have two inflow boxes, the first box will be behind the second box if they overlap and don't have a z-index. You can drag inflow boxes to reorder them on the page.
  2. You can set a z-index value (search for z-index in the User Guide).

Back-to-front order is mostly relevant to absolute-positioned items ("layers" in Freeway). However, you should be careful about using absolute-positioned items. It is tempting to use them when converting a (Freeway) table-layout design to an (Xway/Freeway) CSS design, but they are not a good replacement. Table layouts have been deprecated for many years, but they have the advantage of being vertically flexible. If someone views a table layout with a larger font size, boxes (table cells) will have their size and position adjusted so that they don't overrun each other. That doesn't happen with absolute-positioned boxes: absolute boxes are positioned independently of other (non-ancestor) items and it is very easy to end up with a design that only works if other people are using the same font and screen size. This is why Xway defaults to relative-positioned boxes, which are more suitable for flexible layout.

There are places where absolute boxes may be used appropriately (and sparingly), but it's a good idea to test them with different screen/font sizes. They're not used in the Xway tutorial.

Is there the equivalent of “bring to front” or “Send to Back” or “Bring Forward” or “Send Backwards” of items placed on the page?

I would be so happy to see it back as a true forum.
Freewaytalk was always a mailing list as well as a forum.

I do so much agree. I don’t visit the mis forum list. Don’t get it.
I would be so happy to see it back as a true forum.

My two cents.

Uuuuhhh... this seems like a reallly bad idea.  Shouldn't emails be sent out from an anonymous 'no-reply' address??

For me, it doesn't matter, because as I described, every company/web thingy that I deal with, gets a unique email address.  However, "waltd@..." just came through.

There is a commercial alternative (Discourse) that Apple use for Swift language forums (this does seem to hide email addresses).

It looks pretty good.

I couldn't find out if it does indeed hide email addresses, but aside from that, it's free if you install it on your own server.

Good news! Discourse is, and will always be, 100% free and open source software. You may also want to self-host for reasons other than budget, including privacy or full control over the free software that you've installed. Here's how you can install it yourself on your own server.

I don't think iogroups is different from FreewayTalk in this respect. Walter and Simon might be able to comment in more detail.

We went with iogroups because it is free and was already being used for Mac programming discussions. There is a commercial alternative (Discourse) that Apple use for Swift language forums (this does seem to hide email addresses).

We're trying to move away from Freeway Talk because it has become unreliable. Some Freeway Talk messages never appear online, although they might be delivered as emails. Freeway Talk messages also tend to be (wrongly) identified as spam - I regularly have to check my gmail spam folder.

They are spoofing the headers so that mail clients will work naturally.

Hi Grant,

Because of the nature of groups.io as a mailing list, any members who receive the messages via email can see the email address of the sender. As such, if the email account of any member is compromised, the email addresses of other members could be retrieved from past emails.

More likely, an account has probably registered on the group for the sole purpose of receiving emails and obtaining the email addresses from them when people post messages.

Not a problem for me, as I can change my email in 30secs and never hear from 'Herbert' again.

How do you get these graphics to be centred on the page?

Apologies. I must have missed that!

or even the final result
You can see screenshots of the final result on page 6 of the tutorial.

Re: Video tutorials please

The problem with the tutorial is the total lack of illustrations of the actual document being constructed or even the final result. You don't know what it is supposed to look like therefore you don't know if you have done something incorrectly until several pages later when something is not working out as it should. Videos would be nice but also, please add some illustrations.

Re: SHOWCASE

Geoff Mullett

I have around 80 showcase slideshows, all linked to thumbnails on a 'gallery' page in a freeway site. The only way I've found to convert them to Exhibeo is to re-do them in Exhibeo, a few at a time. Once you have the settings for a gallery that you are happy with, duplicate and rename the Exhibeo file, delete the images and replace them with the ones you want. Then export to Xway.
Sorry, this probably should be in Exhibeo Talk.
