Or to be more precise, it applies the style, just not the redefined style.

If I style it manually and then activate the "Inherit Style" feature, it reverts to the style the app had before I redefined it.

Or am I doing something wrong here?

Also, just as an aside, it would be very helpful to be able to add new styles to the default list, or rename the existing styles, as I would rely extensively on styles in general and would prefer to be able to fully customize them like I could in Freeway.

We'll have to wait until tomorrow, when Jeremy points out how wrong I was. Sorry.

Thanks.  It seems to work in Safari now for me.  Maybe I need to clear the cache or browsing data in Chrome.  Will try that.

Re: disappearing pdf resource pages

I just tried Chrome and Firefox, and the links work fine (for me).

Re: disappearing pdf resource pages

Sorry, I should have told you which pages!  Yes, those are the four links.  I was previewing in Chrome and they weren't appearing.

Re: disappearing pdf resource pages

Hi Art,

I opened your document in Xway b4, and the links I found seem to be working OK:

  • "SEE HERE" (twice) on the "Teaching and Demos" page
  • "LINK TO ARTICLE" (twice) on the "About" page

When I preview in Safari, the links open PDF articles.

Are there some other links that I might have missed?

Flex Box Tips

sethr@...

I've been using Flex Box quite a lot in Xray to align boxes and images across a page which then stack on a small device here is what I've found works well:

1. Create a box that will contain all the items you want to appear horizontally across a page
2. Within that box create a box for each of the items that will go across the page
3. For each of the nested boxes in the Dimensions inspector set the width to be a percentage based on the number of items minus a bit for padding/margins i.e. for 2 boxes set each at 45%, for 3 boxes set at 30%, then in the max/min dimensions change the minimum width from 100px to 300px (a little smaller than the smallest smartphone)
4. If you are going have one or more of the items be an image it must go inside of one of the boxes, in max/min dimensions, set the max-width of the image at 100% so it fills the box
5. Now go back to the first box you created (that has all the other boxes within it) and in Extended Properties (the one under the Text section) enter the following:

NAME                VALUE
display                  flex
flex-flow               row wrap
justify-content      space-evenly

You should see your boxes lined up and evenly space across the page that will stack when the screen gets small enough.
There are other settings you can apply for different effects, check out this page: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/

Hope this is helpful for some!
Seth

Are you able to send us a copy of your document, perhaps via a transfer service (like Dropbox) if it is large?

You could send it to support at softpress dot com

I've tried that a few times but with the same result.  I get a blank tab opening.

Hi Art,

I think you are running into a problem that existed in Xway b2 and b3. This meant that resources that were selected in the Link dialog didn't get saved correctly. If you added a resource link, it would work fine until you saved and reopened the document. We fixed this problem in Xway b4.

You should be able to fix this in your document by opening it in b4 and re-setting each resource link:

1. Place a cursor in the link
2. Click on the Resource popup (which currently says "None") in the Link Inspector and choose "Other..."
3. Choose a (PDF) resource from the file dialog

If you save and reopen your document after doing this, you should find that the links have been saved correctly!

When I last updated my website (last summer), I had linked to a couple of PDF files (containing articles that I wrote) using Resource links.  That worked fine.  I've recently undertaken an update using the newest version of XWay and those links no longer work.  I tried REPLACEing them, but that didn't make a difference.  (The files are located in the same place as before.). Then I tried DETACH and then REPLACE, but that doesn't seem to do anything.  When I try previewing the page, the link results in opening up a blank tab.  Is there something subtle in the new release that I'm missing?

Re: Hamburger menus

Jeremy Hughes

Hi Seth,

Our plan is to build this into Xway. This high up on our development list - after master pages, which we're currently working on.

I think that it should be possible to create a hamburger menu by hand, mainly by using CSS Markup (Page Inspector), but this isn't something I've had time to look into so far.

Hamburger menus

sethr@...

Hi Jeremy,

I’ve successfully recreated quite a few of the many sites I made in Freeway and found a way recreate everything except hamburger menus. I see in a post from 2020 that you talked about providing a CSS workaround but I can’t find any posts with the actual instructions. Any more info on this topic available?

Thanks!
Seth

Completed website

Guido

At long last I have finished my update and redesign from Freeway to Xway and couldn't be more pleased. I wanted a super simple site that would showcase my art. Probably could be more elegant or fancy,  but I finally got the results I was after. The two slide shows that I imported from Exhibeo went in almost flawlessly. Looking forward to the final release of Xway.

Thanks so much to Jeremy for all your help.

Here's the site for better or worse:

Re: Scaling text

Guido

Worked perfectly! Thanks again for all your hard work.

Re: Scaling text

Jeremy Hughes

That's why the text is overlapping. Line height is the layout height of a line, and you're specifying that this is zero (or almost zero). This means that successive lines will overlap previous lines.

You should be able to stop this happening by deleting 0em and 0.01em from the Line Height field, so that they get replaced by "normal" line height. If you want to change the value from "normal", try using a factor (1, 1.5, 2, etc.) There's a section on Line Height in the Xway User Guide: type "1f" if you want to replace "0em" with "1". "Normal" line height is roughly equivalent to a factor of 1.15, so "1" will give you tighter line spacing without causing lines to overlap.

Re: Scaling text

Guido

Line height is set to 0em for the main title and figure caption and  0.01em for the navigation line.

Hi Guido,

Have you set the line height to a small value? It looks as if lines are overrunning each other when they get wrapped.

If you put a text cursor in one of the lines that is jumbling, what value does Line Height show in the Paragraph Inspector?
