Hi Kevin,

Master pages are high up on our to-do list. I don't think they'll be in the next beta (b3), but they could be in the one after that.

Master Pages?

kkendall@...

Hi,
Any estimate for when Master pages might be implemented? We've made extensive use of them in Freeway (https://macvector.com). I don't mind having to start from scratch if I have to (obviously, Freeway project reading would be ideal), but I don't think templates will work for what we do in Xway b2 because we change the masters and like to see the content pages updated automatically. Are there alternative approaches in Xway that might solve this?

Re: Trying to use Exhibeo to create gallery pages - almost there?

I have the same problem. I've spent hours on this and ended up creating a link from a gallery photo in Xway to an unrelated site created in Freeway, where the gallery works fine. An awful workaround, but those visting the gallery don't notice the change of URL, and I have a menu on the Freeway page that links back to the Xway site.

Trying to use Exhibeo to create gallery pages - almost there?

Art Liestman

My only experience with website building is having used Freeway for many years to create and maintain my own website.  I am trying to make a replacement website using Xway.  I have the basic framework of the site set up and working well - about 6 pages so far.

I now need to create a few gallery pages to display my artwork.  Each of these pages would contain 10 or 20 images with captions.  This seemed to be difficult with Xway, so I am trying to use Exhibeo to create the content of the pages and then use Iframes to include those images in the individual gallery pages as was suggested in another thread here.

I have created one such gallery with Exhibeo, but so far I am unable to get it to appear when I do a preview of the Xway page.  Hopefully there is an easy fix.  Can anyone advise me?

In more detail, here’s what I’ve done:

1. I created a sample gallery page in Exhibeo and exported it as HTML.  That produced a folder containing four  folders labelled css, image, js, and theme plus two files: ExhibeoExport.html and index.html.

2. When I click on the index.html file, the appropriate stuff appears in my browser window.

3. Clicking on ExhibeoExport.html, I get the following instructions followed by a window containing html code.

Add Exhibeo to your site

Copy the code by clicking the Copy to clipboard button below.
Paste the code in your <body> tag where you’d like it to appear.
Upload the css, js, image, and theme folders to your server next to the page containing the code.

Copy to clipboard                    Preview

4.  Presumably, this cut and paste is to be done if you are coding in html or using this with Freeway (somehow).

5. On page 87 of the Xway user guide, it explains that Iframes can point to URLs.

6.  I uploaded the three Exhibeo folders and two files and then added the URL of the index.html file in the Xway Iframe.

7. When I try to preview the gallery page in Xway, I don’t get the Exhibeo generated gallery - just a blank space that is roughly the size of the Iframe box.

So, do I need to do something with this cut and paste?  If so, can you tell me where to put it?  If not, what else should I be trying?

Re: Problem opening last year's Xway file

Hi Graz,

That does seem very odd!

Can you send us a copy of your file? Send it to support at softpress dot com - or if it's too large to email, put it online somewhere (e.g. Dropbox) and send us a link.

Problem opening last year's Xway file

@Graz

I created a website about 18 months ago using the first beta of Xway, on the Mojave OS platform. Now I find I cannot open it at all on Catalina with the new beta Xway. I am given the message ‘Xway cannot open files in the “Xway document” format’. This seems rather peculiar and is very frustrating. Can you help me please?

Thanks for the pointer.
I looked at resource view and they are missing there as well.

Not sure how I managed to blow them up.

Yes, it does seem if I delete the preceding link from the preceding button, I can place and set the next one.

For someone like me, (minimum of sites built) that clarification is what I needed to move forward.

Thanks

Be Safe

Hi Jay,

I don’t know that the link behaviour is a bug, but I agree that it is slightly confusing.

Suppose you have a page with the words “Hello world” and you add a link to “world”. Then you type an “s" on the end of “world” so that it says “Hello worlds”. In this case the link that you applied to “world” will also apply to the “s” (by default) — Xway (like Freeway) assumes that if you are typing on to the end of a link (or within a link) you also want the link to apply to what you are typing.

In this case, you aren’t typing — but you are adding an image directly after another image. Xway makes it seem as if the link is added to the image, but really it’s added around the image in the same way that it’s added around text. We could special-case images so this doesn’t happen, and we might think about doing that in future, but the current behaviour happens because Xway doesn’t consider links around images to be different from links around text.

So at this point you have two images within the same link. There isn’t an easy way to move an image so that it’s outside the link (if the image is the last item within a paragraph), so the simplest thing is to remove the link and then reapply separate links to the two images.

As for why some images aren’t in the Site folder, I don’t have an explanation for this (it's not something that has ever happened to me). Normally, you should be able to fix this by republishing, but the fact that that you are seeing question marks within Xway indicates that the images are also missing from the Resources folder that is within the document, and that the original images that you imported are also missing. What do you see if you switch to the Resources view within Xway? Are the images listed there? Is their status “OK” or “Missing”?

Working off the assumption I was missing something, I created a new document using the tutorial set of link buttons.
They behaved the same, with error.

Created 5 buttons,
clicked out of the enclosing box.
Next clicked back in,
highlighted the last button,
clicked right arrow,
clicked insert pict box,
selected a pict and returned to place.

Clicked the link creation button.

Found the problem again which was:
it brought the prior link into the new button so they are tied. ( here is where I think I am missing something, since I can't figure out why it is carried to the button)
I found if I remove the link and say none, I can then add a new link to the new button.
When I previewed at this point, all of the first 5 buttons that had been working did not preview, just the last one created appears.(first 5 don't exist except the spacing)
I saved and restarted Xway.
Upon reopening the 5 buttons have question marks and the last one is still showing. Attempted preview again for giggles and it displayed the same. All 5 buttons missing, (first 5 don't exist except the spacing) 6th button showing and functional.

Bug?

What am I missing?

Thanks

Follow up:
I just looked in the site folder within the package file and it appears all of my picts from the buttons except the last one are gone. So, the picts deleted and the links are gone but the place holders for where the picts in the html still exist.

And to explain this further the values are:

Horizontal offset, vertical offset, blur radius, spread radius, shadow colour.

• The horizontal value controls the left/right position of the shadow, and is required. Negative values shift the shadow to the left.
• The vertical value controls the up/down position of the shadow, and is required. Negative values shift the shadow upwards.
• Blur radius isn't a required value. If you don't supply one the 'shadow' will be as sharp as a scalpel cutout, as if you'd given a value of zero.
• Spread radius isn't required but if used does require a blur radius value (even just zero) so that it's clear this is the fourth item. This affects the scale of the shadow; negative values shrink it down from the default size, positive values grow the shadow.
• Shadow colour is only required if you want something other than a neutral black for the shadow. You can use any valid method of specifying colour, including rgba( ) which provides control of the overall opacity of the shadow colour (separately from the translucency of the blur).

Although these are visually separated with commas here for ease of reading the values should be separated only by a space, not a comma. The only times you'd use commas are within rgb or rgba colour specifications and if you're stacking up multiple shadows in one box-shadow extended property. This is a really cool capability if you'd like to try for something a little more photorealistic, or at least a little less corny. Each complete SET of values must be separated by a comma. The example below strings two shadow values together to create a large hazy pale shadow (using rgba to set half-strength/0.5 opacity) and a denser one (although grey rather than default black shadow colour) more immediately 'behind' the object:

0px 10px 10px -5px rgba(0,0,0,0.5), 0px 25px 30px gray

Put that straight into the 'value' part of an object's Extended Properties 'box-shadow' name and preview in a browser to see how it looks. Have fun!

Re: Embed/insert HTML content?

If you want a diffuse grey shadow:

Name: box-shadow
Value: 10px 10px 5px grey

Re: Embed/insert HTML content?

Hi Jay,

You need to specify a horizontal and vertical offset, and you might also want to specify a colour (unless you want black, which is the default).

Try this:

Name: box-shadow

Value: 10px 10px grey

Just for anyone else doing this ...

If you're mixing Graphics and Boxes (text) inside the same container (on the same page level) then they need to be inside their own Boxes, otherwise it seems that Paragraphs come in to play and none of the CSS works as desired.

Hi John,

We haven’t started testing Xway with Apple’s beta versions of macOS 11, but:

1. We don’t expect any issues (we’re not using old APIs)
2. We will fix any problems that might occur
